Meet Your Psychotherapist

"Therapist" is not a protected title in Ontario. "Registered Psychotherapist" is. Knowing the difference is most of the decision.

Anyone can advertise as a counsellor, a therapist or a coach. Only someone registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario may use the title Registered Psychotherapist or the letters RP, and only they are accountable to a regulator, bound by its standards, and reliably reimbursed by extended health plans. Nicole Bonich is an RP. This page explains what that guarantees, how to verify it for any therapist in ninety seconds, and what to look for in a first session.

Experience & Credentials

Which mental-health titles are actually protected in Ontario.

This is the most useful thing anyone can tell you before you book. In Ontario, Registered Psychotherapist and the letters RP are restricted to registrants of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. Psychologist is restricted to registrants of the College of Psychologists. Social worker is restricted to registrants of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. "Counsellor", "therapist", "life coach" and "trauma coach" are restricted to nobody at all — they carry no required training, no complaints process and no regulator. That is not a reason to distrust everyone; it is a reason to check, and checking takes about ninety seconds on the College's public register.

  • RP: Registered Psychotherapist, a protected title regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario
  • Psychodynamic, relational and attachment-based practice
  • Brainspotting and somatic approaches
  • Couples therapy, and virtual sessions for patients who cannot attend in person

How We Work

The way our psychotherapist works.

Choosing a therapist is unlike choosing any other practitioner in this clinic, because you cannot evaluate the work from outside it. Nobody can look at a therapist's technique and tell whether it will help them. So the two things you can actually assess in advance are the qualification and the fit, and most directories give you neither.

The qualification you can verify in minutes on a public register. The fit you can only assess by sitting in one session — which is why a first session should be framed as an assessment rather than a commitment, and why a therapist who is comfortable telling you they are not the right person is a better sign than one who is not.

01
Verify

Check the register before you book anyone.

The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario publishes a public register. Search a name, and you can see whether the person is registered, in what category, and whether there is anything on their record. Do this for any therapist you are considering, here or anywhere else. It costs nothing and it rules out the whole category of unregulated practitioners advertising the same services at similar prices.

  • RP and Registered Psychotherapist are restricted to CRPO registrants
  • Counsellor, therapist and coach are restricted to nobody
  • Registration means a complaints process, standards of practice and mandatory continuing education
  • Most extended health plans reimburse RP sessions and will not reimburse unregulated ones
02
Assess

The first session is an assessment, not a commitment.

The first appointment is where you find out whether this is a fit. It covers why you reached out and why now, the relevant history, what you have already tried, and a plain explanation of how the work would proceed. There is no requirement to sign up for a block of sessions, and no pressure to.

  • Your reason for reaching out, and what changed recently
  • Relevant history, and any previous therapy and how it went
  • What you want out of the work, in your words
  • A plain description of the approach, before you commit to anything
03
Fit

What a good fit actually looks like.

Fit is not the same as comfort. A good fit means you feel understood rather than managed, you can say the awkward thing, and the therapist can name a pattern you had not seen without you feeling accused of it. If you leave two or three sessions in feeling like you are performing rather than working, that is worth saying out loud rather than quietly cancelling.

  • You can say the difficult thing without rehearsing it first
  • You are hearing observations, not just reflections
  • The approach is explained rather than mysterious
  • It is a normal, expected conversation to say this is not working
04
Coordinate

Psychotherapy in a clinic that treats bodies too.

Chronic stress, burnout and pain rarely stay in one lane, and this is the unusual part of the setup: your psychotherapist works in the same building as three chiropractors, six registered massage therapists, a physiotherapist and an osteopath. When a case is running through the body as well as the mind, the two halves are not being treated by two clinics that never speak.

  • Sessions in person at the Woodbridge clinic, or virtual
  • Manual-therapy practitioners in the same building for stress-linked physical symptoms
  • Referrals between disciplines happen in-house, with your consent
  • Anything you discuss in psychotherapy stays confidential to those sessions
Honest Scope

When a Psychotherapist Isn't the Right First Call

In crisis, do not wait for an appointment

If you are thinking about ending your life or you are at immediate risk, do not wait for a booking. Call or text 988, the Suicide Crisis Helpline, available across Canada at any hour, or call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department. Scheduled psychotherapy is not an emergency service and should never be treated as one.

When a physician or a psychiatrist is needed

A Registered Psychotherapist cannot prescribe medication and does not diagnose medical conditions. If your presentation may need medication, or may have a medical driver such as thyroid or sleep disorder, that belongs with your family physician or a psychiatrist first. Psychotherapy often runs alongside that care rather than instead of it.

When a different professional fits better

Some presentations are better served by a psychologist, who can perform formal psychological assessment and diagnosis, or by a social worker with a specific program. We would rather name that on a first session than keep an appointment we are not the right fit for.

The Roster

Who you will actually see.

One Registered Psychotherapist, which matters more here than in any other discipline in the clinic: the working relationship is the treatment, so continuity is not a convenience.

What Patients Tell Us

What patients say about the clinic

4.9 stars across 407 Google reviews. Psychotherapy patients understandably rarely review that work publicly, so the reviews below are clinic-wide rather than about these sessions — real, unedited, and never rewritten to fit a page.

Start With One Session, Not a Commitment

One Registered Psychotherapist at our Woodbridge clinic on Weston Rd, with virtual sessions available if getting here is the obstacle. The first session is an assessment, and there is nothing to sign up for. No referral required. Psychotherapy with an RP is not covered by OHIP, but most extended health plans reimburse it under a psychotherapy or mental-health benefit.
